Start with the fixed elements: the floor, the window frames and anything you intend to keep. They already belong to the room.
Choose a small number of finishes and compare them side by side. Look at texture and reflectivity as well as colour.
Leave a quiet surface between stronger elements. A room needs places for the eye to rest.
